Automated Data Management
Our website is a case study in our ability to design autonomous self-cleaning database management code.
Since we are cheap and unwilling to invest in thousands of hours of labour to maintain our e-commerce catalog, we instead invest in clever scripts which do the work for us. To put this in perspective our 700,000 item database is reconstructed every night with data gathered from more than 25 suppliers.
Every one of those suppliers has their own unique way to name the manufacturers, enter the part numbers, and to categorize the items.
Our scripts need to “fix” their data before we can use it.
The data we collect from the distributors is compared to a purchased database with millions of sets of product descriptions, specifications, and pictures to add depth to our product information. The products which are not in the purchased database need to be integrated as well, which is where we use intelligent algorithms to categorize the products, and to create descriptions, and in some cases specifications. Categorization is a case where manual processes would be more precise, but horribly expensive. Our approach although not perfect allows new items to instantly integrate with a correct category most of the time.
In addition to the nightly reconstruction of the database, we also use XML to update the data in real time, when you ask for the inventory details on a product by clicking on the product tab.
Ashlin also designed the logic which allows you to quickly search this massive database using up to 50 distinct specifications which are category dependant as well as any number of keywords.
By contrast most of our competitors employ entire departments (including outsourced labour overseas) just to manage the data that we take care of automatically. Brains versus Braun makes a database scalable and much less expensive to manage. Which way do you want to manage dynamic data?
